源自原始意大利语 *kastrom，源自原始印欧语 *ḱes- (“切开。分开”) (Watkins, 1969)。较旧的词源 (1899) 认为派生自 casa，并提出一源自梵语“词根”的源头 *skad-（“覆盖”）。如果直接源自原始印欧语 *ḱ(e)stróm，则与梵语 शस्त्र (śastrám-, śástram-, “切割工具，刀，武器”)同源。^[1]参见 castrō、careō。
